About Dean Stone
A 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher born September 1, 1930, in Moline, Illinois, Dean Stone entered pro ball in 1949 out of United Township High School in East Moline and threw two minor-league no-hitters in 1952 before reaching the majors with the Washington Senators in 1953. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie-era issue, and 1954 was his best season: he went 12-10 with a 3.22 ERA and earned his lone All-Star selection. In the 1954 All-Star Game he authored one of baseball's oddest feats, becoming the winning pitcher without retiring a single batter or throwing an official pitch: entering with the AL trailing, he stepped off the rubber and gunned down Red Schoendienst trying to steal home, and the AL rallied to win 11-9. Used mostly in relief, Stone pitched eight big-league seasons (1953-1963) for the Senators, Red Sox, Cardinals, Colt .45s, White Sox, and Orioles, finishing 29-39 with a 4.47 ERA and 380 strikeouts over 215 games. He died in 2018.
