1954 Topps #113 Bob Boyd

About Bob Boyd
A smooth-hitting first baseman from Potts Camp, Mississippi, Bob Boyd (1919-2004) began his pro career in the Negro Leagues with the Memphis Red Sox in the late 1940s, batting well over .350 and earning three All-Star nods. In 1950 he became the first Black player to sign with the Chicago White Sox, debuting on September 8, 1951. Over nine major-league seasons he played for the White Sox (1951, 1953-54), Baltimore Orioles (1956-60), Kansas City Athletics and Milwaukee Braves (both 1961), hitting .293 with 567 hits, 19 home runs and 175 RBI across 693 games. His finest year came in 1957, when he batted .318 to finish fourth in the AL batting race behind Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and Gene Woodling, becoming Baltimore's first .300-hitting regular of the 20th century. Nicknamed "The Rope" for his hard line-drive stroke, Boyd was later enshrined in both the Negro League and National Baseball Congress Halls of Fame. Fittingly, this 1954 Topps card carries a back error: his birth year is misprinted as 1926 rather than the correct 1919.
