1954 Topps #173 Jack Harshman

About Jack Harshman
Jack Harshman broke into pro ball at 17 in 1945 with his hometown San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League as a slugging first baseman, and the New York Giants bought his contract in December 1947. A San Diego native (born 1927, died 2013), he showed enormous power in the minors — 40 home runs and 111 RBI for the 1949 Minneapolis Millers — but his big-league bat stalled, so the Giants converted the left-hander to the mound around 1950. He debuted with the Giants (1948, 1950, 1952) before finding his footing after being sold to the Chicago White Sox, for whom he pitched from 1954 to 1957; this 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. On July 25, 1954, at Fenway Park he struck out 16 Red Sox in a complete-game win, a White Sox franchise record and a Fenway mark that stood 32 years until Roger Clemens fanned 20 in 1986. Over 10 seasons — also with Baltimore, Boston, and Cleveland — he went 69-65 with a 3.50 ERA and 741 strikeouts. He stayed dangerous at the plate, hitting 21 career home runs; long before Dave Kingman and Mark McGwire, his 21 homers among just 76 career hits gave him one of the highest home-run-to-hit ratios of any batter with 400-plus plate appearances. Chronic back trouble ended his career at 32.
