About Tom Qualters

Tom Qualters, a right-handed pitcher born April 1, 1935, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania (d. 2024), is one of the most curious "bonus baby" stories of the 1950s. A dominant WPIAL schoolboy star, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of high school for roughly $40,000 on June 16, 1953. Under the era's bonus rule, any player signed for more than $4,000 had to stay on the big-league roster two full seasons rather than develop in the minors. Qualters made his lone 1953 appearance on September 13 against St. Louis, retiring just one batter while surrendering six runs for a 162.00 ERA, then spent all of 1954 on the roster without pitching in a single official game. Teammates dubbed him "Money Bags" for his fat bonus and empty box scores. He resurfaced with the Phillies in 1957-1958 and was sold to the Chicago White Sox in 1958, finishing at 0-0 with a 5.64 ERA and 20 strikeouts over 34 games. This 1954 Topps issue (#174) is his rookie card; remarkably, he became the only pitcher to appear on four Topps cards without ever recording a win or a loss. He later served with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
