About Eddie Mayo
Card #247 pictures Eddie Mayo (born Edward Joseph Mayoski, 1910-2006) in his role as a coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, where he served as third-base coach from 1952 through 1954. Before coaching, "Steady Eddie" was a durable major-league infielder for 13 seasons. Signed by the Detroit organization in 1932, he reached the majors with the New York Giants (1936), then played for the Boston Bees (1937-1938) and the Philadelphia Athletics (1943) before starring for the Detroit Tigers (1944-1948). Primarily a second and third baseman, Mayo hit .252 with 759 hits, 26 home runs, and 287 RBI over 834 games. His signature season came in 1945, when he anchored the Tigers' World Series champions and was named The Sporting News AL Most Valuable Player, finishing runner-up to teammate Hal Newhouser in the official BBWAA balloting. He started all seven games of the 1945 Series against the Cubs, and in the decisive Game 7 doubled home a run while scoring twice. Nicknamed "Steady Eddie" for his reliability, he later managed in the minors and coached before retiring from the game after 1954.
