1954 Topps #51 Johnny Lindell

About Johnny Lindell
A rare two-way talent, John Harlan Lindell (1916-1985) signed with the Yankees organization in 1936 and climbed the minors as a pitcher, going 23-4 to earn 1941 Minor League Player of the Year with Newark. Manager Joe McCarthy soon converted him to the outfield, and Lindell blossomed: a 1943 All-Star, he led the AL in triples that year, then peaked in 1944 hitting .300 with 18 home runs and 103 RBI while topping the league in triples (16) and total bases (297) as the everyday center fielder. He starred in the 1947 World Series, going 9-for-18 (.500) and leading the champion Yankees with seven RBI, and earned three titles (1943, 1947, 1949). After developing a knuckleball, he returned to the mound full-time, winning 1952 PCL MVP honors at Hollywood (24-9, 2.52). His 1954 Topps card catches the tail end: he pitched for the 1953 Pirates and Phillies (6-17) before Philadelphia released him in May 1954. Career: .273, 72 HR, 404 RBI; 8-18 as a pitcher.
