About Steve O'Neill

Card #127 pictures Steve O'Neill in his role as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, the post he held from mid-1952 until he was fired during the 1954 season. A Minooka, Pennsylvania native who entered pro ball in 1910 with Elmira and reached the majors with Cleveland in 1911, O'Neill was one of the American League's premier catchers across a 17-year playing career (Cleveland 1911-1923, plus Boston, the Yankees, and the St. Louis Browns), batting .263 with 1,259 hits and 537 RBI over 1,590 games. His finest year was 1920, when he hit .321 and starred behind the plate for Cleveland's world-champion club, earning the nickname "King of the Maskmen" from writers impressed by his elite throwing and pitch-calling. He managed for 14 seasons and never had a losing year, going 1,040-821 (.559) with the Indians, Tigers, Red Sox, and Phillies, and winning the 1945 World Series as manager of the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago Cubs. Three of his brothers also played in the majors.
