About Ben Wade

Benjamin Styron Wade (1922-2002) was a right-handed pitcher signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent before the 1940 season out of Morehead City, North Carolina. After Army Air Force service in World War II, he reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1948, then returned to Brooklyn for a five-season big-league career (1948, 1952-1955) that also included the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. His best year came in 1952, when he went 11-9 with a 3.60 ERA and set career highs of 37 games, 24 starts, and 118 strikeouts while helping the Dodgers win the National League pennant; on July 6, 1952, he famously homered twice off Warren Spahn. Wade pitched in both the 1952 and 1953 World Series, each lost to the Yankees. Over his career he posted a 19-17 record, 4.34 ERA, and 235 strikeouts in 371.1 innings. His larger legacy came off the field: as the Dodgers' longtime director of scouting from 1973, he stocked the organization with talent such as Orel Hershiser, Steve Sax, and Mike Piazza. This 1954 Topps card (#126) captures him during his Brooklyn tenure.
