1954 Topps #121 Clem Labine

About Clem Labine
Clement Walter Labine, a right-handed pitcher from Lincoln, Rhode Island, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944 and reached the majors on April 18, 1950 after a paratrooper stint with the 82nd Airborne in World War II and a minor-league apprenticeship that ran through St. Paul. Over 13 seasons (1950-1962) with the Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Mets, he became one of the game's first great relief specialists, going 77-56 with a 3.63 ERA, 551 strikeouts, and 96 saves. A two-time All-Star (1956, 1957), Labine held the NL career saves record from 1958 to 1962 and set Dodgers franchise marks for saves and games pitched. He won three World Series (1955 and 1959 Dodgers, 1960 Pirates) and is best remembered for his 10-inning, 1-0 shutout of the Yankees in Game 6 of the 1956 Series, a duel with Bob Turley the day after Don Larsen's perfect game. Venezuelan winter-ball fans nicknamed him "La Vaina." He died in 2007 at age 80.
