1954 Topps #86 Billy Herman

About Billy Herman
A slick-fielding second baseman out of New Albany, Indiana, Billy Herman reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1931 and became one of the finest keystone men of his era. Over 15 seasons with the Cubs (1931-1941), Brooklyn Dodgers (1941-1946), Boston Braves (1946), and Pittsburgh Pirates (1947), he batted .304 with 2,345 hits, 47 home runs, and 839 RBI in 1,922 games. A masterful hit-and-run man and glove wizard, he was named to 10 straight All-Star teams (1934-1943), set the single-season NL record for putouts by a second baseman (466 in 1933), and led the league in putouts seven times. His 1935 campaign was a gem: an NL-best 227 hits and 57 doubles at a .341 clip, good for fourth in MVP voting. Herman reached four World Series (1932, 1935, 1938, 1941) but never won a title as a player. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1975. This 1954 Topps card pictures him as a Brooklyn Dodgers coach, the role he held from 1952 to 1957 after his playing days; he was formally christened William Jennings Bryan Herman, after the famed orator.
