About Bob Milliken
Robert Fogle "Bob" Milliken was a right-handed pitcher who worked his way up through the Brooklyn Dodgers system, pitching for the Fort Worth Cats (1948-49) and the Montreal Royals (1950) before military service interrupted his career in 1951-52. Returning in 1953, the West Virginia native (born August 25, 1926, in Majorsville) debuted with Brooklyn on April 22 and immediately contributed to the pennant push, going 8-4 with a 3.37 ERA over 37 appearances and 117 innings for the National League champions; in the 1953 World Series against the Yankees, he tossed two innings of shutout relief. He followed with a 5-2, two-save 1954 before arm trouble ended his big-league days. Over just two seasons and 61 appearances—all with the Dodgers—Milliken went 13-6 with a 3.59 ERA, four saves, and 90 strikeouts in 180⅓ innings. He later spent years as a batting-practice pitcher, pitching and bullpen coach for the St. Louis Cardinals (1965-70, 1976), and a minor-league instructor and scout. He died January 3, 2007, in Clearwater, Florida. As Milliken's first Topps card came in 1953, this 1954 issue is not his rookie card.
