About Charlie Thompson
Card #209 pictures Charles Lemoine "Tim" Thompson (1924-2021), a catcher born in Coalport, Pennsylvania, whose 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. After serving in the Navy during World War II — where he flew Goodyear K-class blimps on Pacific-coast patrol — he signed with the Brooklyn organization and became a career minor-leaguer, logging roughly 1,500 games across 16 pro seasons (1947-1962), including a long run with the Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs. He finally reached the majors at age 30, debuting for the Dodgers on April 20, 1954. Over parts of four seasons he played 187 big-league games for Brooklyn (1954), the Kansas City Athletics (1956-57), and the Detroit Tigers (1958), batting .238 with 8 home runs and 47 RBI. He is credited as the first confirmed National League catcher to wear glasses in a regular-season game, having adopted spectacles in the minors in 1952. After playing he coached (St. Louis Cardinals, 1981) and scouted for decades. Topps spelled his name three ways across his cards — "Charlie" here in 1954, "Charley" in 1957, and "Tim" in 1958 — which is why the card's "Charlie" differs from his standard "Tim Thompson" record. He is not a Hall of Famer.
