About Rube Walker

Albert Bluford "Rube" Walker (1926-1992), a left-handed-hitting catcher from Lenoir, North Carolina, signed with a Chicago Cubs farm club in 1944 out of Lenoir High School and reached the majors in April 1948. He spent 11 seasons in the National League, first with the Cubs (1948-1951) and then, after a June 1951 trade, with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers (1951-1958), where he was the durable backup to Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella. Over 608 games he batted .227 with 360 hits, 35 home runs, and 192 RBI. He earned a 1955 World Series ring with Brooklyn and pinch-hit in the 1956 Series. Filling in for an injured Campanella, Walker was behind the plate for the deciding 1951 pennant playoff when Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." He got his nickname as a Lenoir batboy who idolized team star Rube Robinson. His greatest fame came later: as the Mets' pitching coach he helped guide the 1969 "Amazin' Mets" staff to a championship, popularizing the five-man rotation.
