About Mike Fornieles
A right-handed pitcher born José Miguel Fornieles y Torres on January 18, 1932, in Havana, Cuba, Mike Fornieles was discovered by Washington Senators super-scout Joe Cambria and signed in 1950. He authored one of the greatest debuts in big-league history: on September 2, 1952, at age 20, he threw a one-hit shutout to beat the Philadelphia Athletics 5-0, yielding only a second-inning single to Joe Astroth and retiring the final 14 batters. Over 12 seasons (1952-1963) he pitched for the Senators, Chicago White Sox (1953-56), Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox (1957-63), and Minnesota Twins, going 63-64 with a 3.96 ERA, 576 strikeouts, and 55 saves across 432 games. Converted to relief in Boston, he peaked in 1960 with a then-major-league-record 70 relief appearances, a 10-5 mark, 2.64 ERA, and 14 saves (tied for the AL lead), earning The Sporting News' inaugural AL Fireman of the Year Award; he was also the winning pitcher in Ted Williams' final game. He made the 1961 AL All-Star team. This 1954 Topps card is a Fornieles rookie-era issue depicting him during his White Sox years. He died February 11, 1998, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
