About Bob Keegan

A right-handed pitcher out of Bucknell University, Bob Keegan served as a B-24 navigator in the Army Air Force during World War II before signing with the New York Yankees organization and reporting to the minors in 1946. He toiled seven-plus years in the bushes, breaking through with a 20-11 season for Syracuse in 1952, and did not reach the majors until 1953 with the Chicago White Sox, at age 32. Keegan pitched all six of his big-league seasons for Chicago (1953-1958), going 40-36 with a 3.66 ERA and 198 strikeouts over 135 games. His best year was 1954, when he won 16 games (16-9, 3.09 ERA) and earned an American League All-Star selection. His signature moment came on August 20, 1957, when he threw a complete-game no-hitter against the Washington Senators at Comiskey Park, the majors' first no-hitter since Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game. Teammates called him "Smiley" because, as ace Billy Pierce put it, "It always looked like he was smiling, even when he wasn't." Keegan later entered the Bucknell (1982) and Rochester Red Wings (1993) Halls of Fame and died in 2001. This 1954 Topps card (#100) is not his rookie card and carries no error or variation.
