1954 Topps #101 Gene Woodling

About Gene Woodling
A left-handed line-drive hitter from Akron, Ohio, Gene Woodling was signed by Cleveland scout Bill Bradley out of high school and turned pro in 1940, leading four different minor leagues in batting (a .398 mark at Mansfield in 1940 among them) and earning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year honors in 1948 with the San Francisco Seals. A left fielder, he reached the majors with the Indians in 1943 and played 17 seasons for the Indians, Pirates, Yankees (1949-1954), Orioles, Senators, and Mets, batting .284 with 1,585 hits, 147 home runs, and 830 RBI over 1,796 games. His signature run came in the Bronx, where he was one of only a handful of players on all five of Casey Stengel's consecutive World Series champions from 1949 through 1953; he hit .318 across those Series, batted .348 in 1952 with a Game 7 solo homer, and became the first player to pinch-hit a triple in World Series history. With Hank Bauer he formed the platoon dubbed the "Gold Dust Twins." His lone All-Star nod came in 1959, during his best season for Baltimore. Woodling later served as the Orioles' first-base coach under Bauer, part of their 1966 championship. He is enshrined in the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame but not Cooperstown.
