About Eddie Robinson
Born December 15, 1920, in Paris, Texas, William Edward "Eddie" Robinson signed with the Knoxville Smokies for a $300 bonus in 1939 and debuted with the Cleveland Indians in 1942 before losing 1943-1945 to U.S. Navy service in World War II. A power-hitting, left-handed first baseman, he played 13 major-league seasons (1942, 1946-1957) for Cleveland, the Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Detroit Tigers, and Baltimore Orioles. A four-time All-Star (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953), he peaked in 1951 with career highs of 29 home runs and 117 RBI, and helped the 1948 Indians win the World Series, batting .300 in the Series. Over 1,315 games he hit .268 with 172 home runs and 723 RBI. Traded to the defending-champion Yankees after 1953, he served mainly as a pinch hitter on this 1954 club (a stellar .306 in that role). Robinson later became a longtime executive, serving as general manager of the Braves and the Rangers. He was the last surviving member of the 1948 champion Indians and died in 2021 at age 100.
