About Frank Leja
A left-handed first baseman out of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Frank Leja (1936-1991) was one of the era's most famous "Bonus Babies." A three-sport star at Holyoke High School who hit .432 as a senior in 1953, he was signed the day after graduation by legendary Yankees scout Paul Krichell, who touted the 18-year-old as "another Lou Gehrig." Under MLB's 1952 bonus rule, his large signing bonus forced New York to keep him on the big-league roster for two full seasons rather than develop him in the minors. The result was a career that never matched the hype: buried on Casey Stengel's bench, Leja appeared in just 19 games for the Yankees in 1954-55 and managed only one major-league hit, a single against the Philadelphia Athletics on September 19, 1954. After years in the minors, where he did show power (a nickname, "Iron Liege," came after he hit 22 homers at Binghamton in 1957), he resurfaced with the expansion Los Angeles Angels in 1962. In all he played 26 big-league games across three seasons, batting just .043 (1-for-23). This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. He later ran a lobster company in Nahant, Massachusetts, and died of a heart attack in 1991 at age 55.
