About Andy Carey
A slick-fielding third baseman from Alameda, California, Andy Carey (born Andrew Arthur Hexem, October 18, 1931) was signed by Yankees scout Joe Devine for a hefty $60,000 bonus after attending St. Mary's College. He debuted in 1952 and by 1954 was New York's regular third baseman, batting .302 with 65 RBI in 122 games that season. In 1955 he led the American League with 11 triples. Carey played 11 big-league seasons (1952-1962) for the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, White Sox and Dodgers, hitting .260 with 741 hits, 64 home runs and 350 RBI over 938 games. He was a two-time World Series champion (1956, 1958) and is best remembered for two clutch defensive plays that helped preserve Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 Series — knocking down a smash to start a putout in the second inning and snaring a low Gil Hodges liner in the eighth. This is his third-year Topps card; he retired in 1962 and later worked as a Los Angeles stockbroker, dying December 15, 2011.
