About Willie Miranda
Guillermo "Willy" Miranda Perez (1926-1996) was a slick-fielding Cuban switch-hitting shortstop signed out of Havana by legendary Washington scout Joe Cambria in 1948. After minor-league stops at Sherman-Denison and Chattanooga, he reached the majors in 1951 and played nine seasons (1951-1959) for the Senators, White Sox, Browns, Yankees, and Orioles. This 1954 Topps card captures his stint in pinstripes: acquired in 1953 as defensive insurance for Phil Rizzuto, Miranda was on the Yankees' roster for their 1953 World Series title (though he did not appear in the Series). Sent to Baltimore in the historic 17-player trade of November 1954, he became the Orioles' everyday shortstop and in 1955 led the American League in putouts, assists, and double plays. Renowned for his glovework yet a notoriously light hitter, he batted just .221 with 6 home runs for his career. Manager Paul Richards, marveling at his acrobatic plays, dubbed him "Barnum and Bailey." A five-time Cuban winter-league champion with Almendares, Miranda was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.
