About Luis Aloma

A Cuban right-handed reliever, Luis Alomá Barba was born in Havana on June 19, 1923, and signed as an amateur free agent with the Washington Senators in 1944. After working through the minors and brief trades to Detroit and then Chicago in 1949, he reached the majors with the White Sox in 1950 at age 26. He spent his entire four-year big-league career (1950–1953) in the Chicago bullpen, going 18–3 with a 3.44 ERA, 115 strikeouts, and 15 saves. His finest season came in 1951, when he posted a 6–0 record with a 1.82 ERA. That June 17, pressed into a rare spot start amid a crowded schedule, Alomá shut out the Philadelphia Athletics on five hits—the only start of his career, making him one of just four players to throw a shutout in their lone major-league start. Known as "Witto," a nickname carried on his contemporary Bowman cards, he died in Park Ridge, Illinois, on April 7, 1997.
