About Fred Marsh
Fred Francis Marsh (January 5, 1924 – October 26, 2006) was a right-handed infielder, primarily a third baseman, born in Valley Falls, Kansas. Signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1942 out of Chicago's Steinmetz High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before returning to pro ball, and was discharged in 1945. Marsh debuted in the majors on April 19, 1949 with the Cleveland Indians, then bounced between clubs across seven seasons (1949, 1951–1956), playing for the Indians, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. A well-traveled utility man, he was dealt several times — reuniting with manager Paul Richards in Baltimore in December 1954 — and enjoyed his best season in 1954 with the White Sox, hitting .306 in 62 games; this 1954 Topps #218 captures him during that campaign. Over 465 games he batted .239 with 296 hits, 10 home runs and 96 RBI, never earning an All-Star nod. After baseball he spent many years as a postal carrier, and died in Corry, Pennsylvania, at age 82.
