About Al Sima

Albert "Al" Sima was a left-handed pitcher who reached the majors at age 28, breaking in with the Washington Senators on June 28, 1950. A Mahwah, New Jersey native (born October 7, 1921; died 1993 in Suffern, New York), he served in the U.S. Navy in 1944-45 during World War II before his baseball career. Sima pitched four big-league seasons for the Senators (1950-51, 1953), Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Athletics (both 1954), appearing in exactly 100 games and posting an 11-21 record, a 4.61 ERA and 111 strikeouts. Traded from the White Sox to the A's on June 11, 1954, he earned a footnote in history that September 19: Sima was the last pitcher to take the mound for the Philadelphia Athletics, throwing a scoreless ninth in the franchise's final home game at Connie Mack Stadium before the club moved to Kansas City. It was also his own final major-league appearance. Fittingly for a southpaw, his 1954 Topps card (#216, pictured with the White Sox) is a well-known uncorrected error: the back mistakenly lists him as a right-hander, when it should read "Throws: Left."
