1954 Topps #146 Don Johnson

About Don Johnson
Donald Roy Johnson (1926-2015), a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Portland, Oregon, signed with the New York Yankees as a teenager after tossing six no-hitters in high school and American Legion ball. The 6-foot-3 righty debuted in 1947 and won his first big-league start, a 10-inning 3-2 decision over Philadelphia, going 4-3 for the 1947 World Series champion Yankees, though he did not pitch in the Series. Over seven major-league seasons he worked for the Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants, compiling a 27-38 record with a 4.78 ERA, 12 saves, and 262 strikeouts in 198 games. His finest year came with the White Sox pictured on this 1954 Topps card: he went 8-7 with a 3.12 ERA, three shutouts, and seven saves for a 94-win Chicago club. He later starred for the International League's Toronto Maple Leafs, leading the league with a 2.67 ERA in 1953 and earning MVP honors in 1957.
