About Johnny Riddle

John Ludy "Mutt" Riddle, pictured here as a St. Louis Cardinals coach, was a career backup catcher who turned a long baseball life into a coaching career. Born in Clinton, South Carolina in 1905, he earned the nickname "Mutt" during his freshman year playing basketball and football at the University of Georgia, then broke into pro ball in 1927 with Sanford of the Class D Florida State League. Riddle proved a durable minor leaguer—19 seasons, including roughly a dozen with the Indianapolis Indians—but reached the majors only in scattered stints, appearing in just 98 big-league games for the White Sox (1930), Senators and Boston Bees (1937-38), Cincinnati Reds (1941, 1944-45) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1948). He hit .238 with no home runs and 11 RBI. He was the older brother of Reds and Pirates pitcher Elmer Riddle, alongside whom he played. After his playing days he coached for the Pirates (1948-50) and Cardinals (1952-55), later earning a World Series ring as a coach with the 1957 Milwaukee Braves before finishing with the Reds and Phillies. He died in 1998 at age 93.
