About Bob Trice

Robert Lee Trice (1926-1988) was a right-handed pitcher who broke a color barrier: his September 13, 1953 debut made him the first Black player in Philadelphia Athletics history, nearly six-and-a-half years after Jackie Robinson. A Georgia native and Navy veteran, the 6-foot-3 Trice began in the Negro Leagues with the Homestead Grays (1948-1950) before starring for the Triple-A Ottawa A's in 1953, going 21-10 and earning International League MVP and Rookie of the Year honors, which earned his call-up. Over three seasons with the Athletics in Philadelphia and Kansas City (1953-1955), he went 9-9 with a 5.80 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 26 pitching appearances. His signature moment came in 1954, when he shut out the defending World Series champion New York Yankees. A 1954 spring-training shoulder injury sapped his fastball, and after requesting a demotion he was back in the minors by 1955. This is Trice's rookie card, issued the year the Athletics played their final season in Philadelphia.
