1954 Topps #52 Vic Power

About Vic Power
A slick-fielding first baseman born Victor Pellot in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Vic Power was signed by the New York Yankees but was traded to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953 after the club deemed him "not the Yankee type" and instead made Elston Howard its first Black player. His 1954 Topps card (#52) is his rookie card. Power debuted with the A's on April 13, 1954, and played 12 major-league seasons (1954-1965) for the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles/California Angels, and Philadelphia Phillies. A four-time All-Star, he won seven consecutive Gold Gloves (1958-1964), pioneering a flashy one-handed catch that was once criticized as showboating but is now standard. He hit .284 with 1,716 hits, 126 home runs, and 658 RBI, and on August 14, 1958, famously stole home twice in one game against Detroit. His surname traces to a teacher who mistook "Pove" for "Power." Regarded among the greatest Puerto Rican players, he died in 2005. Note: the card's back misprints his birth year as 1931 instead of 1927.
