About Bill Renna
A towering 6-foot-3, 218-pound right fielder, Bill Renna was a two-sport star at Santa Clara University before Yankees scout Joe Devine signed him in 1949 for $5,000 on a tip from Broncos coach Paddy Cottrell. After a big minor-league year at Triple-A Kansas City (.295, 28 HR in 1952), Renna reached the majors with the New York Yankees in 1953, batting .314 in 61 games; he homered back-to-back with Mickey Mantle in his first start and earned a World Series ring, though he did not appear in the Yankees' win over Brooklyn. Traded to the Philadelphia Athletics, he had his finest season on this 1954 rookie card, posting career highs of 13 home runs, 53 RBI, and a .254 average in 123 games for the last-place club. He also played for the Kansas City Athletics (1955-56) and Boston Red Sox (1958-59), where he called himself "Ted Williams' caddy." Nicknamed "Big Bill" for his imposing frame, Renna hit .239 with 28 home runs and 119 RBI over six seasons and 370 games. Born in Hanford, California, he died in 2014 at age 89.
