About Rollie Hemsley
Card #143 pictures Rollie Hemsley in his role as a Philadelphia Athletics coach in 1954, capping a long career behind the plate. Ralston Burdett Hemsley (1907-1972), a rugged catcher, debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1928 and played 19 major-league seasons through 1947, suiting up for the Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Browns, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies. A five-time All-Star (1935, 1936, 1939, 1940, and 1944), he hit .309 for the Browns in 1934. On Opening Day 1940 he caught Bob Feller's no-hitter — the only no-hitter ever thrown on Opening Day — and drove in the game's lone run with a triple. Over 1,593 games he batted .262 with 1,321 hits, 31 home runs, and 555 RBI. Nicknamed "Rollicking Rollie" for his hard-living reputation, he famously got sober through Alcoholics Anonymous and in 1940 became one of the first prominent members to reveal his membership publicly. He later coached for the Athletics, as shown here, and the Washington Senators.
