About Carl Scheib
A right-handed pitcher from a farm near Gratz, Pennsylvania, Carl Scheib was spotted informally in his hometown and signed by Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, debuting on September 6, 1943, at age 16 — he remains the youngest player in American League history and the youngest pitcher ever to record a strikeout. After Army service in 1945-46, he returned to pitch for the Athletics through 1954, closing his career with the St. Louis Cardinals that same season. Over 11 seasons and 267 games (107 starts, 47 complete games, 17 saves), Scheib went 45-65 with a 4.88 ERA and 290 strikeouts. He was also one of the era's best-hitting pitchers, batting .298 with a grand slam in 1948 and .396 in limited 1951 at-bats (career .250, 5 HR, 59 RBI). Philadelphia sportswriters dubbed the phenom "Wonder Boy" after three straight wins in June 1947.
