1954 Topps #168 Morrie Martin

About Morrie Martin
Morris Webster "Lefty" Martin (September 3, 1922 - May 2010), pictured here with the Philadelphia Athletics, was a left-handed pitcher whose baseball story is inseparable from his wartime heroism. The Chicago White Sox signed him off the Dixon, Missouri, town team in 1941, but World War II intervened: Martin served as a combat engineer with the First Army's 49th Combat Engineer Battalion through Operation Torch, the D-Day landings at Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge, where a thigh wound and gangrene nearly cost him a leg, saved only by heavy penicillin treatment. He earned two Purple Hearts. Debuting with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949, he went on to pitch ten big-league seasons for seven clubs -- the Dodgers, Athletics (1951-1954), White Sox, Orioles, Cardinals, Indians, and Cubs. His best year was 1951 with the A's: 11-4 with a 3.78 ERA, including his only career shutout, a five-hitter over Detroit on July 19. Over 250 games he finished 38-34 with a 4.29 ERA, 15 saves, and 245 strikeouts.
