1954 Topps #167 Don Lund

About Don Lund
A hometown Detroit product, Don Lund (1923-2013) starred as a three-sport, nine-letter athlete at the University of Michigan and was a first-round NFL draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 1945, but chose baseball, signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers via scout George Sisler. A right-handed outfielder, he reached the majors in 1945 and played seven seasons across three teams: the Brooklyn Dodgers (1945, 1947-1948), the St. Louis Browns (1948), and his hometown Detroit Tigers (1949, 1952-1954). His finest year came in 1953 as Detroit's regular right fielder, when he set career highs of a .257 average, nine home runs, and 47 RBI in 131 games. Over 281 big-league games he batted .240 with 15 home runs and 86 RBI. Lund's greater fame came afterward: he coached the University of Michigan to the 1962 College World Series title (a 15-inning, 5-4 win over Santa Clara), then served as the Detroit Tigers' farm-system director from 1963 to 1970, building much of the roster that would win the 1968 World Series. He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
