About Jim Delsing
A left-handed-hitting outfielder who patrolled center and left field, Jim Delsing signed his first pro contract at age 16 in 1942 with the Green Bay Bluejays of the Class D Wisconsin State League before serving over a year in Europe with the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He reached the majors in 1948 and played ten big-league seasons through 1960, appearing for the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Athletics. His best year came with Detroit in 1953, when he hit .288 with 11 home runs and career highs of 138 games, 138 hits, 77 runs, and 62 RBI. Over 822 games he batted .255 with 627 hits, 40 home runs, and 286 RBI. Delsing is best remembered for one of baseball's most famous stunts: on August 19, 1951, playing for Bill Veeck's Browns, he was sent in to pinch-run for 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel after Gaedel drew a walk. He was also the Tigers center fielder replaced by Al Kaline in Kaline's 1953 major-league debut. This is his fourth-series card in the 1954 Topps set, picturing him with Detroit.
