About Johnny Hopp

Card #193 pictures Johnny Hopp not as a player but as a coach: by 1954 the Nebraska native had joined Fred Hutchinson's Detroit Tigers staff as third-base coach, capping a genuine 14-year big-league career. Discovered playing semi-pro ball, Hopp signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936 and starred in the low minors (a .361, 26-homer debut at Class D Norfolk) before reaching St. Louis on September 18, 1939. A left-handed outfielder and first baseman, he played through 1952 for the Cardinals, Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees and Tigers, hitting .296 with 1,262 hits, 216 doubles, 46 home runs, 458 RBI and 128 stolen bases over 1,393 games. Fast and versatile, he earned a 1946 National League All-Star start in center field at Fenway Park and won four World Series rings—1942 and 1944 with the Cardinals, 1950 and 1951 with the Yankees—appearing in five Fall Classics. Nicknamed "Hippity" (a play on his surname) and "Cotney" for his cotton-blond hair, he later coached the 1956 Cardinals as well. Hopp died in 2003 at age 86.
