1954 Topps #192 Cot Deal

About Cot Deal
Ellis Ferguson "Cot" Deal, a right-handed pitcher from Arapaho, Oklahoma, entered pro ball after a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a teenager, signing and debuting in the minors in 1940 with Hutchinson of the Western Association. He reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1947 and later pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team on this 1954 Topps card, appearing in his final big-league games that season. Across four major-league campaigns he went 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA, 34 strikeouts, and one save over 45 games. A switch-hitter, he singled off Bob Lemon in an early appearance and homered once as a batter. Nicknamed "Cot" for his cotton-top hair, Deal spent nearly five decades in the game, starring for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings and becoming that club's first manager in 1957, then working long stints as a big-league pitching coach. He died in 2013 at age 90.
