About Steve Bilko
Steve Bilko (born November 13, 1928, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania; died 1978) was a burly right-handed first baseman who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and debuted in pro ball at age 16 with Allentown in 1945. He reached the majors with St. Louis in September 1949 and played parts of ten big-league seasons (1949-1962) for the Cardinals, Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, Tigers, and expansion Los Angeles Angels, batting .249 with 76 home runs and 276 RBI over 600 games. His best year in the majors was 1953, when he hit 21 homers with 84 RBI for the Cardinals but also led the National League in strikeouts. Bilko earned lasting fame not in the majors but in the Pacific Coast League: with the minor-league Los Angeles Angels he won three straight PCL MVP awards and home-run titles (1955-1957), capped by a 1956 Triple Crown season of .360, 55 home runs, and 164 RBI that inspired the nickname "the Bilko Athletic Club." Nicknamed "Stout Steve" for his ample build, he is widely credited as the namesake of TV's Sgt. Bilko on The Phil Silvers Show. He was posthumously inducted into the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame in 2003.
