About Dick Schofield

John Richard "Ducky" Schofield (1935-2022) was a switch-hitting shortstop out of Springfield, Illinois, who became the St. Louis Cardinals' first bonus baby when scouts Joe Monahan and Walter Shannon signed him to a $40,000 contract in June 1953. League rules kept the 18-year-old on the big-league roster, and he debuted at age 18 that July — this 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. Over 19 seasons (1953-1971) he played for the Cardinals, Pirates, Giants, Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Brewers, mostly as a slick-fielding utility infielder. His finest stretch came in 1960: after Pirates shortstop Dick Groat broke his wrist in September, Schofield took over and hit .403 down the stretch to help Pittsburgh clinch the pennant and win the World Series over the Yankees. He batted .227 with 699 hits, 21 home runs, and 211 RBI over 1,321 games. Nicknamed "Ducky" after his father, he founded a baseball dynasty: his son Dick Schofield Jr. had a 14-year MLB career, and his grandson is Jayson Werth.
