About Stu Miller
Signed by St. Louis Cardinals scout Joe Cusick out of a 1949 tryout camp in his hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts, right-handed pitcher Stu Miller climbed through the minors—learning the deceptive changeup from manager Vedie Himsl—and debuted for the Cardinals in 1952, the club shown on this 1954 Topps card. Over 16 seasons (1952–1968) he pitched for St. Louis, the Phillies, the New York/San Francisco Giants, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Atlanta Braves, evolving from spot starter into one of the era's premier relievers. A finesse artist who lived on off-speed junk rather than velocity, he led the National League in ERA in 1958 (2.47) and was named The Sporting News Fireman/Reliever of the Year in 1961 and 1963. Nicknamed "The Butterfly Man" for pitches that seemed to flutter, Miller is best remembered for a 1961 All-Star Game balk at windy Candlestick Park—the legend that a gust blew him off the mound, which he spent his life denying. He won a World Series with the 1966 Orioles and retired 105–103 with a 3.24 ERA, 154 saves, and 1,164 strikeouts in 704 games.
