About Eddie Stanky

Card #38 pictures Eddie Stanky in his role as St. Louis Cardinals manager, capping a scrappy playing career. Born September 3, 1915, in Philadelphia (d. 1999), the second baseman spent nearly eight years in the minors before reaching the majors at age 27, then played 11 seasons (1943-1953) for the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, Giants, and Cardinals. A three-time All-Star (1947, 1948, 1950), he hit .268 with 29 home runs and 364 RBI, but his real gift was the walk, drawing 100-plus bases on balls in six seasons and leading the National League in runs (128) in 1945. He reached three straight World Series (1947 Dodgers, 1948 Braves, 1951 Giants), all losses. Nicknamed "The Brat" for his snarling, combative edge, he so annoyed opponents with the "Stanky maneuver"—waving his arms behind second base to distract hitters—that Commissioner Ford Frick banned it. As shown on this card, he became Cardinals player-manager in 1952, earning The Sporting News Manager of the Year, and managed St. Louis through 1955. Durocher's verdict endured: he "can't hit, can't run, can't field, he just knows how to win."

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)

Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.

  • White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
  • Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
