About Tom Poholsky
A 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher, Tom Poholsky (born August 26, 1929, in Detroit; died January 6, 2001, in Kirkwood, Missouri) signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and made his professional debut at just 15, filling a roster spot for the Durham Bulls in 1945 as a wartime stopgap. He starred in the minors — 37-11 over two seasons at Columbus and the 1950 International League Most Valuable Player with the Rochester Red Wings, where on August 13, 1950 he pitched a complete-game 22-inning win over Jersey City's Andy Tomasic, retiring 18 straight batters between the 14th and 20th. In the majors he pitched for the Cardinals (1950-51, 1954-56) and Chicago Cubs (1957), going 31-52 with a 3.93 ERA and 316 strikeouts in 159 games (104 starts), never posting a winning big-league season. His minor-league mark was 80-54, and he was inducted into the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1990. This 1954 Topps card (#142) pictures him in the middle of his Cardinals tenure.
