About Joe Jay
Card #141, listed as "Joe Jay," pictures right-hander Joseph Richard "Joey" Jay (1935-2024), best remembered as the first Little League Baseball graduate to reach the major leagues. A Middletown, Connecticut, high school star who threw three no-hitters, Jay signed with the Milwaukee Braves as a "bonus baby" and debuted on September 20, 1953, at just 17, tossing a complete-game shutout in his first start. Rule-bound to the big-league roster, he saw limited work with the Braves (1953-1955, 1957-1960) — this rookie-era card captures him in that stretch — and rode Milwaukee's pennant-winning benches in 1957 and 1958. His career took off after a 1960 trade to the Cincinnati Reds, where he won 21 games in both 1961 and 1962, led the NL in wins in 1961, and made his lone All-Star team. In the 1961 World Series he beat the Yankees with a complete-game four-hitter in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. Over 13 seasons (1953-1966) Jay went 99-91 with a 3.77 ERA and 999 strikeouts across 1,546⅓ innings, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2008.
