About Del Crandall
A defensive standout behind the plate, Del Crandall (Delmar Wesley Crandall, 1930-2021) signed with the Boston Braves out of Fullerton Union High School in California and debuted in 1949, becoming the youngest starting catcher in modern big-league history at 19. After two years of military service, he returned in 1953 to claim the Braves' regular catching job and held it through the franchise's move to Milwaukee, handling a staff that included Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, and Bob Buhl. Over 16 seasons (1949-1966) with the Braves, Giants, Pirates, and Indians, the eight-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner was widely regarded as the finest defensive catcher of his era, leading NL catchers in assists a record-tying six times and catching three no-hitters. He anchored Milwaukee's 1957 World Series champions, homering off the Yankees for the final run in the 5-0 Game 7 clincher. Crandall batted .254 with 1,276 hits, 179 home runs, and 657 RBI across 1,573 games, and later managed the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners. This is not a rookie card; his rookie season was 1949.

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
