About Bill Bruton
William Haron "Bill" Bruton, born November 9, 1925, in Panola, Alabama, reached pro ball through his father-in-law, Hall of Fame Negro Leagues star Judy Johnson, who steered him to a Philadelphia Stars tryout and then to Boston Braves scout Jack Ogden; Bruton signed with the organization in 1950 and hit .325 at Triple-A Milwaukee in 1952. A swift center fielder—arguably the fastest man in 1950s baseball—he debuted with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 and won it in style, launching a walk-off home run in Milwaukee's first major-league game on April 14, 1953. Over 12 seasons with the Braves (1953–1960) and Detroit Tigers (1961–1964), he batted .273 with 1,651 hits, 94 home runs, 545 RBI and 207 stolen bases in 1,610 games, leading the National League in steals three straight years (1953–1955), in triples twice (1956, 1960) and in runs once (1960). He batted .412 for the pennant-winning 1958 Braves, driving in the winning run with a tenth-inning walk-off single in Game 1 before they fell to the Yankees in seven, and on August 2, 1959 became the fourth big-leaguer to hit two bases-loaded triples in one game. After baseball he spent 23 years as a Chrysler executive; he died December 5, 1995, in Marshallton, Delaware.
