1954 Topps #79 Andy Pafko

About Andy Pafko
A Wisconsin farm boy from Boyceville, Andy Pafko signed out of the Northern League in 1940 and tore through the minors—hitting .356 with 118 RBI to win the 1943 Pacific Coast League MVP with the Los Angeles Angels—before reaching the majors that same year. A right-handed outfielder who starred in center and right field, he spent 17 seasons with the Chicago Cubs (1943–51), Brooklyn Dodgers (1951–52), and Milwaukee Braves (1953–59), batting .285 with 1,796 hits, 213 home runs, and 976 RBI over 1,852 games. A four-time NL All-Star, he drove in 110 runs for the pennant-winning 1945 Cubs and belted 36 homers in 1950. Nicknamed "Handy Andy" for his versatility—he even manned third base in 1948—Pafko appeared in four World Series with three teams, winning it all with the 1957 Braves. He was famously the Dodgers' left fielder in 1951 when Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" sailed over his head. This card captures his home-state Milwaukee years; he was named to the Cubs' All-Century Team in 1999. He died in 2013.
