About Jackie Jensen

A San Francisco native (born March 9, 1927; d. 1982), Jackie Jensen was a two-sport star at the University of California, a consensus All-American halfback who scored in the 1949 Rose Bowl and helped Cal win the first College World Series in 1947. He left school in 1949 to sign with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks, and his contract was sold to the Yankees in 1950 alongside Billy Martin's. A right fielder, Jensen played 11 seasons (1950-1961) for the Yankees, Washington Senators, and Boston Red Sox, hitting .279 with 1,463 hits, 199 home runs, 929 RBI, and 143 stolen bases over 1,438 games. A three-time All-Star (1952, 1955, 1958), he won the 1958 AL MVP with 35 homers and a league-leading 122 RBI, paced the AL in RBI three times (1955, 1958, 1959), stole the most bases in the league in 1954, and earned a Gold Glove in 1959. Nicknamed the "Golden Boy" for his bright blond hair, Jensen was the first athlete to play in a Rose Bowl, a World Series, and a Major League All-Star Game; a severe fear of flying famously drove him into early retirement at his peak.
