About Bill Consolo

A celebrated "bonus baby," Bill (Billy) Consolo signed with the Boston Red Sox on February 2, 1953, the day he graduated from Los Angeles' Dorsey High School, for a bonus of roughly $60,000. Under the era's bonus rule he had to stay on the big-league roster, jumping straight from high school to the majors at 18, a mandate widely blamed for stunting his development. An infielder who saw time at shortstop, second, and third, Consolo played 10 major-league seasons (1953-1962) for six clubs, including the Red Sox, Washington Senators, and Minnesota Twins. He batted .221 with 260 hits, 9 home runs, and 83 RBI over 603 games, his best year coming in 1957 when he hit .270 in 68 games for Boston. A lifelong friend of Sparky Anderson from the L.A. sandlots, Consolo later served as Anderson's Detroit Tigers coach from 1979-1992 (and 1995), part of the 1984 World Series champions. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card.
