About Ted Lepcio

Thaddeus Stanley "Ted" Lepcio (July 28, 1929–December 11, 2019) was a right-handed utility infielder born in Utica, New York. He earned a baseball scholarship to Seton Hall, where coach "Ownie" Carroll called him the best player he ever had, then signed with the Boston Red Sox for a reported bonus after graduating in 1951. Following a stint at Triple-A Louisville, Lepcio debuted with Boston in 1952 and played 10 major-league seasons (1952–1961), splitting time between second base, shortstop, and third base for the Red Sox (1952–1959), Detroit Tigers (1959), Philadelphia Phillies (1960), Chicago White Sox (1961), and Minnesota Twins (1961). A steady glove more than a bat, he hit .245 with 512 hits, 69 home runs, and 251 RBI over 729 games; his best year came in 1956, when he clubbed 15 homers—nine of them in an eighteen-day burst. He was roommate to and staunch defender of Jimmy Piersall, and after retiring became a longtime trucking executive who stayed active in Red Sox alumni circles until his death in 2019.
