About Jim Willis
Jim Willis (James Gladden Willis, born March 20, 1927, in Doyline, Louisiana) was a right-handed pitcher who stood 6-foot-3 and, though he threw right, batted left. After Army occupation duty in Germany, he starred at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, becoming the school's first player ever to reach the majors (N-Club Hall of Fame, 1976; his No. 28 jersey retired in 2009). He signed in 1949 with the Alexandria Aces of the Evangeline League, winning 14 games as a rookie, and after stops with clubs such as the Greenville Majors, Monroe Sports, and Shreveport Sports, the Chicago Cubs took him in the December 1952 minor-league draft. Willis pitched only for the Cubs, across 1953-54, going 2-2 with a 3.39 ERA over 27 games (4 starts, 2 complete games, 20 strikeouts). His best moments came in September 1953: complete-game wins of 7-2 over Cincinnati and 7-1 over the Giants. Teammates ribbed the quiet, shy hurler with the nickname "Gabby." This 1954 Topps #67 is his lone Topps rookie card; he left baseball in 1955 to teach and later serve as a school principal in Boyce, Louisiana, where he died January 2, 2026, at age 98.
