About Frank Baumholtz

A two-sport star, Frank Conrad Baumholtz was a consensus second-team All-American guard at Ohio University, whom he led to the 1941 NIT final while being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player; his No. 54 was later retired by the school. He played pro basketball (Youngstown Bears, and the Cleveland Rebels of the BAA) before reaching the majors as a left-handed-hitting outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds in 1947, finishing fifth in Rookie of the Year voting after batting .283 with 182 hits. Over ten seasons (1947-1957) with the Reds, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies, he hit .290 with 1,010 hits, 165 doubles, 25 home runs, and 272 RBI in 1,019 games. His best year came in 1952, when he batted .325 to finish runner-up to Stan Musial for the National League batting title; in a famous season-ending publicity stunt, Cardinals manager Eddie Stanky had Musial pitch to Baumholtz, who batted right-handed and reached on an error. With the slow-footed Cubs outfield, he was tagged one of columnist Mike Royko's "Quicksand Kids." Fittingly for this card, the birth date printed on the back is in error; Baumholtz was born October 7, 1918.
