1954 Topps #4 Hank Sauer

About Hank Sauer
Henry John "Hank" Sauer, born March 17, 1917, in Pittsburgh, was a powerful right-handed slugging left fielder spotted on a sandlot by a Yankees scout and signed into their farm system in 1937. After a long minor-league apprenticeship — including a monster 1947 at Syracuse (50 HR, 141 RBI) — he became a big-league regular late, playing 15 seasons (1941-1959) for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York/San Francisco Giants. His peak came with the Cubs: in 1952, at age 35, he tied Ralph Kiner for the NL home run title (37) and led the majors in RBI (121), winning the NL MVP over Robin Roberts and Joe Black — the first MVP ever from a second-division (fifth-place) club. A two-time All-Star (1950, 1952), he homered in the rain-shortened 1952 All-Star Game for the winning blow. Beloved at Wrigley — dubbed "the Mayor of Wrigley Field," and "Honker" for his large nose — fans showered him with chewing tobacco after homers. He hit .266 with 288 HR and 876 RBI over 1,399 games, but never reached a World Series. He is a member of the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame and died in 2001.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
